John Patton Gourley was born on 17 Jan 1870 in the Curry Creek Community (now Kendalia), Kendall, Texas and died Blanco, Blanco, Texas on 18 Aug 1955. He was the son of William Patton "Bill" Gourley and Emma Elizabeth Lawhon Gourley.

He married Emma Jane Knibbe in 1893. They had four children:

Bessie Opal Gourley;

Jeanne Gourley;

Baxter William "Bill" Gourley; and
